About
Michiru Encinas is a Japanese-Mexican costume maker based in Sydney. Whilst completing the BFA (Costume) at NIDA, she has costume supervised for the productions Sandaime Richard (2023), Kindness (2023), and Prem Patr (2022). Michiru also undertook secondments at Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet.
Growing up, Michiru competed in artistic roller skating, performing in costumes from sequined leotards to feathered wings, all delicately handmade by her coaches. This is where her love of costume was born.
For her NIDA costume research project, Michiru explored traditional and contemporary kimono-making techniques in order to make a kimono for theatre that tells a story through its design. She enjoyed learning about this traditional artform and connecting to her cultural background through the process.
Michiru also has a keen interest in theatre, having enjoyed working as a dresser for the Sydney performances of Cruel Intentions (2022), Cinderella (2022-2023) and The Rocky Horror Show (2023).
Michiru is passionate about working in film, theatre, millinery, dance, and further exploring kimono making and traditional Japanese costumes.
